Rwanda, is a Republican country found in Eastern Africa, It is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley, where the African Great Lakes region. It is one of the smallest countries on the African mainland, and its capital city is Kigali. It sprawls across numerous hills, ridges and valleys, and has a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial documents the 1994 mass killings in Rwanda, associated with the country’s civil war. The city’s Caplaki Crafts Village has stalls selling traditional handicrafts, including woodcarvings and woven baskets. Before the country was under the Central African block but when it later joined the East African Community and hence joined the Common Wealth group.

The country’s main city “Kigali” was to host the CHOGM meeting in June 2020 but due to the out break of the Pandemic Coronavirus in the world the country had to cancel the meeting. After the relaxation and introduction of vaccine of the Coronavirus in world, Rwanda will be hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from 25th – 26th June 2021 – Kigali, Rwanda.

• CHOGM Opening Ceremony: 25th June 2021 at Kigali Convention Centre

COVID-19 measures

Rwanda has been observing all COVID-19 preventive measures as recommended by the World Health Organization. For CHOGM, the country will implement additional measures, including COVID-19 green zoning areas for participants throughout their stay in Rwanda. These precautions include among others.

• Limiting CHOGM green areas only to participants and service providers with proof of negative test results.
• Establishing strict infection prevention control (IPC) measures within CHOGM green areas.
